Massage parlor restrictions delay code changes

Arroyo Grande Municipal Code amendments to decrease Village restaurant parking requirements, increase beauty salon parking requirements and increase massage parlor regulation are on hold at least until March.

The Planning Commission last week supported proposed changes to parking requirements for restaurants and beauty salons but had concerns about how massage parlors might be regulated, said Rob Strong, community development director.

U.S. defense secretary to begin four-country tour

WASHINGTON, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates will depart here for a nine-day trip Wednesday to Australia, Indonesia, India and Turkey, the Pentagon said Tuesday.

Gates will join U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte in the annual talks with Australian officials on bilateral security, according to spokesman Geoff Morrell.

As a vital mission of the trip, Gates will put arms sales on his agenda in India. "The secretary is always an advocate for U.S. defense companies," Morrell said.

On his way abroad, he will make a stopover in Hawaii where the U.S. Pacific Command headquarters are located, the spokesman added.

The Pacific islands are also the base for the U.S.

'No more diets. You must learn to love food.'

French women have many secrets. Secrets about beauty, hair, health, fashion. But French women don't share their secrets. Except one: Mirielle Guiliano.

Author of the No. 1 New York Times bestseller, “Why French Women Don't Get Fat," Guiliano shatters the silence and gives women the skinny on how to stay slim while feasting on pastries, chocolate, wine and bread.

Svelte and sophisticated, this former CEO of Champagne Veuve Clicquot USA draws upon hundreds of years of familial and cultural tradition to show how struggling dieters need a paradigm shift.

“No more diets," she urges. “You must learn to love food."

Guiliano shares her wisdom in an amusing and delightful manner in the petit volume. Fifty recipes, containing ingredients most hardcore dieters would kill for, are interspersed throughout the book.

Many Brazilians settling in N.O., but for how long?

A little more than two years ago, Marcos Pereira, a Brazilian carpenter living in suburban Boston, saw the televised images beaming out of a devastated New Orleans. And in the images he glimpsed opportunity.

Kissing his reluctant wife and two daughters goodbye, Pereira loaded his tools into a van and drove alone to New Orleans. He took a motel room in Luling and commuted daily into the city, where he found steady work for months -- far more than he had been seeing back in Somerville, Mass., where times were slow.

Today Pereira, 40, is a New Orleanian, planting roots in a new home. Three months ago he ended once-a-month visits back to Massachusetts and summoned his wife, Jackeline, and two daughters, Fernanda, 9, and Leticia, 5. They rent a house in Metairie and hope to buy.
