| Sen. Mel Martinez wants to double Medicare fraud penalties
U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez on Tuesday trumpeted his proposal to stiffen criminal and civil penalties for people who abuse the nation's health-care system, bringing his message to South Florida, the nation's worst haven for Medicare fraud. ''In Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties we probably have three of the busiest counties in fraud in the United States by a large measure,'' the Florida Republican told reporters at Miami Dade College. He said the federal government estimates about $60 billion in Medicare fraud claims a year, including about $12 billion in Florida. ''Four million Floridians and 47 million Americans that are uninsured could all be amply insured if we just took the fraud out of the Medicare system,'' he said. Martinez, who also met with U.S.
Obama Beats ... Jesse Jackson
Paul Mirengoff makes the best case for McCain's charge that Romney "wanted to set a date for withdrawal" from Iraq. It's still weak!*** (See also AP and Lowry and Ponnuru.) McCain seems to believe his wartime heroism entitles him to an unlimited moral bank account that he can withdraw from whenever it's in his self-interest to do something dishonest. Of course, sometime down the road when it helps advance his candidacy he may righteously apologize for having lied to advance his candidacy--and bask in the press' fawning over this "extraordinary act of contrition," the same way he did in 2000. ... **--Quote is from Lindsey Graham. [What about him?--ed He's McCain with all the self-righteousness but none of the heroism.] ***--Clarification: I'm not saying Mirengoff defended McCain, but rather that he went out of his way to give McCain the benefit of every doubt and still concluded it was a smear.
Talking about HIV and AIDS
Brazil has the highest number of people living with the virus in South America. We support the work of peer educators in the cities of Sao Paulo, Recife and Natal, who have helped 2,355 young people talk about relationships, values and rights and to learn about prevention through discussions and drama activities. Surveys show that 36 per cent of young people aged 15 to 24 had had sex before the age of 15 in Brazil, and 20% reported more than 10 partners. We have recently begun working with 10- to 14-year-olds to ensure they have the knowledge and skills to protect themselves against contracting HIV and AIDS. Our Sissy Aminata programme in Sierra Leone encourages discussion of formerly taboo topics such as safer sex and sexual abuse. The programme produces books and pamphlets with fictional letters sent to an 'agony aunt' Sissy Aminata.

U.S. candidates get set for 2 crucial primaries
In 2008 it's still OK to hate certain groups. The last time I checked it out in the main stream media the Mormons were fair game. Well, I guess we'll just have to settle for an economic know-nothing with no executive experience. At least they're not Mormons. .
BMW cars that you can't crash
London: German automobile manufacturer BMW has installed the Active Cruise Control system in its 5 and 6 Series cars, which automatically stops the vehicle to avert an accident without having to use the breaks. The system uses a radar beam to constantly measure the distance to the vehicles in front of it. A driver can set the desired speed and distance to be maintained from the car in front, and then sit back and do next to nothing. Once activated, the system enables the car to drive on its own, with the only exception that the driver needs to control the steering. It can slow the vehicle a complete stop when necessary, and later scoot back up to the set speed as soon as traffic allows. The system breaks the car even when someone veers across three lanes to cut you off.
