Talk of the bay: Home insurers insulated from financial crises
Despite the slump in the housing market, it looks like it'll be another good year for the property insurance industry. According to a report Wednesday by rating service A.M. Best, the industry saw net income rise 4.4 percent through the first nine months of 2007, driven largely by underwriting profits and investment returns. Net income was $49.8-billion, up from $47.7-billion for the same period a year ago. How did Florida do? Quite well, thank you. Initial reports show the industry had profits of at least $3.4-billion last year. WellCare yanks its Connecticut deal WellCare Health Plans of Tampa has told Connecticut state officials thanks, but no thanks. As of March 1, WellCare will end its Medicaid contract with Connecticut, which covers about 35,000 people and brought in $57-million in revenues during the first nine months of 2007.
Tips for being frugal and fabulous
Buying all the best brands? Not so frugal. Picking through your neighbor's trash? Not so fabulous. With the country's economic health on the line, how can you save money without suffering style? Here are some ideas to live the fabulous life while still being frugal: Do your own darn toenails -- The only people who might look at your feet closely enough to know the difference between a DIY pedicure and a fancy spa treatment won't judge you for it anyway, suggests Megan O. Steintrager, 35, an editor in New York. Use pale colors; a bright red coat might show if it's out of the lines. And besides, sandal season is months away. It's all in the packaging -- Refill fancy-brand soap dispensers with generic liquid soap, says Jeanne-Marie Hudson, 36, a marketing director for a publishing company.
We were always in with a chance
Any person, club, organisation or whatever be it in sport or business plays the game to WIN, otherwise why bother. The reason for no relegation this year is that super league franchises are up for grabs next season and if any club does not meet or exceed the franchise criteria they will be out on their ear regardless of where they finish in the table. Clubs who do not reach the minimum criteria off the pitch, note off the pitch, have everything to lose. This means they have to operate as a viable business entity with correct business development plans in place, suitable and safe stadia, local development systems in operation and community programmes established. This has taken a long time to come but in my opinion this takes RL to the next level. Still behind our friends in Oz but this is a positive step in the right direction.
Name room in honor of fallen Foxboro officer
The challengers need to have enough support on the board of selectmen to oust the town manager.Confident that Selectman George Dentino is one sure vote, recall supporters believe that replacing two other selectmen with two more like-minded members will get the job done. If this is accomplished we will be presented with a board whose majority would be focused on a negative mission a mission very much like those signs on the side of a store downtown. These types of missions are embarrassing, not to mention the political mire in which our town will be immersed. Such a board would find itself spending inordinate amounts of their time and our money on something that will eventually play itself out with next spring's town election. If the challengers prove victorious in this recall election, and act hastily on this issue, they could likely expose the town of Mansfield to even more liability.I know Bob Goldman.
US Consumers Oblivious to GM Food Fears
Concerns over genetically modified foods have failed to make much impact in the United States, where consumers and the US media are less fired up about the issue than in Europe, activists say. Dr Michael Hansen, a biologist with the major New York-based Consumers Union, says the media doesn't talk about GM issues and there is more apathy in the US. "When the public is asked in the survey, a high percentage wants food labels," he said. "They just don't realize the extent to which certain food such as corn or soybean are genetically engineered, and often they have not heard of any of these food safety concerns." On Friday, French President Nicolas Sarkozy banned the only genetically modified crop grown in France, the Mon 810 maize produced by the US agriculture giant Monsanto.
Sheryl Crow's album reflects on survival, heartache
She's not afraid ... of running from what's happening in the world today," he says. "Sheryl, as an artist, has the ability to do what few artists can do." Crow, who turned 46 on February 11, looks easily two decades younger than her age. She wears formfitting jeans and a clingy top, highlighting her petite, athletic shape. Her hair is a sun-kissed collection of loose curls. A product of Kennett, Missouri, she lived for years in Los Angeles as a backup singer and then star, and later in Texas, with Armstrong. Now she's made a home in a 154-acre farm outside Nashville, Tennessee. The intense media interest in her life following the very public breakup with Armstrong and subsequent cancer diagnosis is not something she misses. Her current distance from the tabloids -- and, of course, the new baby -- have helped clear her head.
