Governor's Office Re-Opens In Western Mass.

In the vestibule, empty shelves soon will be filled with new brochures on state programs, grant applications, tourism and other topics of possible interest to visitors.

Cardona, 39, a Springfield native appointed in January to run the office, said she receives a steady stream of calls from throughout the four-county region.

Many people have questions about state services or suggestions on improving programs. Others need help with everything from starting a new business to understanding the state's health care insurance requirements.

As word has spread that the office reopened, she said, drop-in visits have increased, too.

"Our goal is to make this office as valuable a resource as possible," Cardona said. "The governor has clearly said his intention is to be the governor for the entire state, and I do believe he'll be using this office frequently."

Full-time branch offices are common in many larger states nationwide, Massachusetts and Connecticut are the only New England states that have them.

NY takes on smoking in kids' movies

The Health Department's new campaign calls for certifying in closing credits that people involved with a film weren't paid to promote tobacco products. Daines also wants anti-smoking ads to run before every film that shows tobacco use. And the campaign encourages the film industry to stop naming and prominently showing tobacco brands. In movies about historical figures who smoked, the 'R' rating could be suspended, Daines said.

A 2003 study published in the journal Lancet followed the movie-watching habits of thousands of children and teenagers who never smoked. Between 13 and 26 months after the initial contact, the study found that 17 percent of those who had the highest exposure to movies depicting tobacco use had started smoking. That's compared with 3 percent who saw the least.

Sunday night insights

Chelsea Clinton or Sam Woods? -- Tough loss for the SCOREGolf team at Q107's Office Wars last week. Kudos to those who made it out for us so early in the morning – me, I was busy having a staring competition with the back of my eyelids. Bites Why should I spend my Friday afternoon watching Samuel L. Jackson hit bunker shots? Better than spending my Friday night watching him in Snakes on a Plane, I guess -- I'm not keen on the whole celebrity golf thing, but George Lopez entertains the hell out of me -- Had the chance to play the South Course at Torrey Pines in November. The La Jolla muni hosts this week's Buick Invitational and the U.S. Open in June. It's a good course on a great piece of property, but it doesn't come anywhere close to the top 10 courses in this country. Too many mediocre holes and too few on the ocean -- The new PGA Tour cut rule is both difficult to understand and completely unfair, like a jigsaw puzzle without the corner pieces -- You've got the chance to rewrite one section in the Rules of Golf.

The scandal of Scotland's battered women

Ross-shire Women's Aid refuge worker Marilyn Ross said some women are staying longer, typically two years, rather than the six months originally intended by the service, which is putting more pressure on refuge space.

She said: "We are looking at people staying for a year and a half to two years. It's an open-door policy, but it works both ways. We refer women to other refuges down south and have women coming from all over Scotland and England."

Dumbarton District Women's Aid refuses 60%-65% of women, and many return to their abusive partners if they cannot accept the council housing offered when they leave a refuge.

Co-ordinator Liz Gillespie said: "There's very little housing stock and much of what is available, isn't desirable. The council will only make two offers before it has fulfilled its obligations.
